Calculation of Carbon Footprint for Transportation in Sustainability Footprint Management System

Recently, SAP showcased a demo of its Sustainable Footprint Management (SFM) solution, with a specific focus on the calculation of transport carbon footprint. This demonstration emphasized the system’s ability to calculate the carbon footprint of transportation activities using various data elements such as shipment number, weight, source location, destination location, delivery date, quantity, mode of transport, and product.

These data elements can be extracted from SAP ECC or SAP S/4 HANA Embedded Transportation Management from transaction documents. By leveraging pre-determined emission factors for each stage of the process, the Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) framework can provide customized total carbon emission factors for any defined energy pathway.

This functionality enables detailed monitoring and reporting of emissions, helping in managing the environmental impact across supply chains. By using pre-configured emission factors, the framework can quickly generate carbon footprint estimates for different energy forms and uses, allowing users to compare the carbon impacts of various fuel options.

The demo also illustrated how the system provides dynamic reports on CO2 emissions related to transport activities, with detailed data on parcel target locations, products, quarters, and more. This level of insight allows for informed decision-making and strategic planning to reduce carbon emissions in transportation.
